Homeopathic first aid # 7 Food poisoning

Your remedies to tackle food poisoning should be tucked into your suitcase if you’re off on holiday soon. There’s nothing like a case of diarrhoea and vomiting to put a dampener on things, and the right homeopathic remedies will clear the symptoms and speed the recovery.

Medical attention must be sought if there’s a fever over 40 degrees, any sign of dehydration (such as little or no urination) or if diarrhoea lasts for more than 3 days it becomes bloody.  But if the food poisoning is recent and uncomplicated, follow the remedy advice below.

The first remedy to reach for is Arsenicum Album and you should take it straightaway if there’s any sign of food poisoning. If you don’t get a chance to take a remedy straightaway and the symptoms have developed fully, Arsenicum will definitely still be your remedy if you have diarrhoea, vomiting or both, and you’re chilly, exhausted thirsty for small sips of water. Your remedy is definitely Arsenicum if you also feel very anxious, restless and frankly very needy.

If Arsenicum doesn’t feel right, your next remedy to think of is China. The symptoms that China helps will normally involve a lot of bloating and burping as well as diarrhoea, which is often painless. China is also a remedy for recovery from loss of fluids - which is certainly what happens after diarrhoea and vomiting. So it’ll help bring your energy back as well as help you feel better.

Think of Ipecac if the nausea and vomiting are very persistent and can be brought on by the sight, smell, or even the thought of food. If Ipecac is your remedy, you may have black and sticky stools and have severe abdominal cramps.
