International Women's Day

Yesterday was International Women’s Day and it made me want to give a very loud shout out to 2 completely indispensable homeopathic remedies that I use again and again to support women’s female health issues.

There is no such thing as an entirely female (or male) homeopathic remedy, but as some natural substances have a similarly natural affinity for the female organs, they are therefore of huge importance in women’s health.

The two remedies I’d like to celebrate are Sepia and Pulsatilla. Sepia is made from the ink of a cuttlefish and Pulsatilla is the wind flower. As a homeopathic practitioner, I’m not sure a week goes by without me prescribing one or both of these remedies. They both come into their own at times of hormonal change, so they are essential at menarche and during puberty, if your body needs to resettle itself after taking artificial hormones, during and after pregnancy and also at menopause.

However, each remedy has its own personality too. Sepia may well be of huge help to people who are stretched in multiple directions at once. A classic situation would be a mother who has to see to the needs of her family, to her work and also keep the house looking ok. The result may be exhaustion, irritation - especially towards the husband and/or children - and a big drop in libido, all of these things being worse around her period. Sepia will help improve the energy and mood in this all too familiar situation.

Pulsatilla suits a different kind of person. The classic Pulsatilla type is a needier type who craves support, love and attention, and she gets very tearful if these things are not available. Again there will be hormonal issues but this may be more towards amenorrhoea or irregularities in the cycle. Additionally, Pulsatilla is a very phlegmy remedy and is brilliant for snotty kids who tend to be clingy and slightly whiny when they're ill – here it is of equal use in boys and girls.

Homeopathic remedies are safe for use at all stages of life – even during pregnancy – so always consider the homeopathic approach for your health needs and a happy - if belated - International Women's Day.
