Home prescribe homeopathy # 4: Aconite, Belladonna and Chamomilla for fevers

Aconite, Belladonna and Chamomilla are the top three homeopathic remedies for fevers, and given at the onset of symptoms can be incredibly effective at both bringing down the fever fast and nipping any developing symptoms of colds, coughs and other illnesses in the bud.

Do please note that the NHS website advises to get an emergency GP appointment if your child:

  • is under 3 months old and has a temperature of 38C or higher, or you think they have a fever

  • is 3 to 6 months old and has a temperature of 39C or higher, or you think they have a fever

  • has other signs of illness, such as a rash as well as a high temperature

The following homeopathic advice, therefore, is to support the person while waiting for the appointment or at the very first sign of the fever.

Aconite

Aconite is for fevers which come on suddenly and strongly. The child needing Aconite will often wake at night, with a hot, dry heat and full of fear. Their heart might be racing, they'll be restless, and very, very anxious. The symptoms might come on after having been out in a cold, dry wind earlier that day, or after having been very scared by something. Aconite is very useful at the first sign of lots of children's acute illnesses such as coughs, colds and sore throats.

Belladonna

Like Aconite, the Belladonna fever comes on very suddenly. The child will wake hot (though their hands and feet may feel cool), red cheeked and perhaps with glassy eyes and dilated pupils. The Belladonna child may well become delirious in fever, perhaps seeing monsters in the shadows.

 Chamomilla

Classically, Chamomilla (pictured here) is the remedy to think of if your child has a fever which accompanies teething. The fact that teething is behind the fever might well be indicated by the fact the child may have one red and one pale cheek. The child may have a sweaty head, but it is their behaviour which is most indicative of this remedy: the child is very irritable, even angry, with the fever. They'll be very needy, wanting to be picked up and held as you pace exhaustedly up and down the room. They'll also be capricious, wanting one thing and then another, then another but nothing satisfies. Chamomilla will bring down the fever and calm the anger.

Sometimes it can be worrying to see your child with a fever, and that anxiety can make it hard to decide which remedy fits the closest. It is possible to obtain all three remedies in a combination called ABC (Aconite, Belladonna, Chamomilla) for such moments.
