I can remember all too clearly the pain of feeding with cracked nipples. It’s a pain that goes through your whole body. I wish I’d had the headspace at that time to follow some of the measures described below.
The most commonly used homeopathic remedies are these:
Castor Equi
This remedy is very specific for sore, cracked nipples and will be useful for most cases. The breasts may be engorged and may itch, or the mother may be completely well apart from the problem with the nipples.
Phytolacca
When the pain from cracked nipples radiates throughout the body. Phytolacca (pictured here) is also the first remedy to reach for if mastitis threatens so is a very good remedy to have in the house while breastfeeding.
In addition to using the better indicated homeopathic remedy, think about implementing the following ideas too:
Feeding your baby at the first sign of their hunger and not allowing them the time to get upset by the hunger will enable the baby to attach without the force of desperation. You can even try feeding when they’re still half asleep as they’ll be gentler in that half-asleep half-awake state.
Feed on the less sore side first.
Limit the time your baby feeds to around 10 minutes of active feeding per side. Let them such your finger if they still need that sensation.
If you’re not highly sensitive to cold, rub your nipple with an ice cube before feeding.
Keep your nipples dry between feeds.
Externally, use Phytolacca tincture neat or Calendula cream.
I hope this was helpful. Please feel free to get in touch for more information.
