This week, we will identify some of the most commonly used homeopathic remedies used for PCOS. One of them, Thuja, is pictured here. While homeopathy is a brilliant resource for home-prescribing when it comes to first aid or uncomplicated, non-severe illnesses, prescribing for a condition such as PCOS requires professional homeopathic attention. For measures that can be taken independently, please see last week’s entry. The following acts simply as an insight into the kind of remedies that may well be helpful if you suffer from PCOS and not a guide for self-prescription.
As irregular periods are nearly always a feature of PCOS, a homeopath will have to look at other aspects of the symptom picture to ascertain which remedy may be the most effective. Last week, we saw that stress is a huge consideration in PCOS, so considering how a person responds to stress is vital. Equally, some remedies are more appropriate if there’s weight gain, others if there’s hair loss, yet others if acne is a problem.
Calcarea Carbonica
This remedy comes into consideration if the menstrual bleed is too long and too heavy. There may be weight gain and thinning hair. There will be anxiety, a tendency to be a worrier and a tendency also to give up when pressure mounts. This remedy suits chilly and sweaty body types.
Lycopodium
This remedy suits if there’s bloating or weight gain around the middle with PCOS. Stress will be internalised as a feeling of not being good enough with crises of confidence. There’ll likely be sweet cravings and a desire for warm drinks.
Pulsatilla
For this remedy to be right, there will be a lot of changeability in the symptom picture, with erratic periods and often moodiness too. Acne around the jawline is often a problem and there may be a history of ovarian pain or ovaritis. Stress will be responded to with a sensitivity and easy overwhelm and a desire for reassurance and support, which makes things feel much better.
Sepia
The typical PCOS picture is written large in this remedy, with hirsuitism and hair loss from the head alongside scanty and delayed menses. There will be a picture of overwork and overdoing things and therefore also a burnout either there or looming. Stress will be responded to by a desire to escape or a feeling as if she really can’t be bothered - irritated or indifferent.
Thuja
This remedy will help if there’s PCOS with acne, excess sweating and thinning hair. There may be a history of warts and verrucas too. The symptoms of PCOS may lead to feelings of low self-esteem and poor self-image.
This is just a selection of remedies used in the homeopathic treatment of PCOS, but there are many others suiting the different presentations of this syndrome. Please feel free to get in touch for further information.
