Winter Wellbeing #3 Apple Cider Vinegar for sinusitis

Apple Cider Vinegar is one of those things which our mum tried to force on to us as kids, with little success, but which I now have completely come around to, tail fully between my legs. It is a must-have for many reasons, not least if you’re liable to sinusitis. In a steam inhalation, the naturally antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties of Apple Cider Vinegar really clean out the nasal passages to help clear sinus infections.  Simply add a quarter of a cup of Apple Cider Vinegar to 2 cups of water and bring to the boil. Pour it into a bowl. Hold a towel over your head like a tent, lean over the bowl and inhale the steam for 3 minutes.

In additional praise of Apple Cider Vinegar, when I can face it, I drink a tablespoon daily in a glass of water. The fermentation process involved in the making of the vinegar does wonders for your digestive tract and biome, and therefore for your immunity. Drinking the vinegar in apple juice can help take the sting out if the taste bothers you. Do make sure you get Apple Cider Vinegar containing the Mother. The Mother in vinegar, which gives it its cloudy appearance, is where all the good bacteria lies, so the cloudier, the better.

Winter Wellbeing #2 Black Elderberry

elder-693931_1920.jpg

Black Elderberry has incredible antiviral properties and has a major affinity with the respiratory tract from the sinuses to the lungs. Elderberry also contains lecthins which can stop the replication of different strains of the flu virus.  It is a safe and natural way alleviate colds and flu. You can obtain Elderberry in a liquid supplement, which like homeopathic remedies, provide definitive proof that not everything which is good for you has to taste vile. There is even a children’s liquid supplement, which might actually pass muster with your kids, too.

Winter Wellbeing #1 Vitamin C

I think that the huge benefits of the not-so-humble Vitamin C can sometimes be overshadowed by the trendier, though very deserving, superfoods such as turmeric or chia seeds. Vitamin C actually blocks pathways by which viruses enter cells, and therefore its benefits to the body are huge, particularly at this time of year.

Foods rich in Vitamin C include the following:

  • Peppers

  • Strawberries

  • Citrus fruit

  • Broccoli

  • Sprouts

  • Blackcurrants

  • Thyme and Parsley

  • Kale

  • Kiwi

If time isn't on your side but you want to ensure your Vitamin C intake is regular, do consider having supplements, but please make sure you avoid brands that use fillers and bulking agents which can significantly offset the advantages of taking the Vitamin C. A trusted local supplier of Vitamin C as well as many other immunity boosting products is Herbies of Albert Road (02392 92753458).

Keep well and don't hesitate to get in touch for further information.

Natural Fertility with Homeopathy #6 Candida.

pasque-flower-5013681_1920.jpg

If you’re wanting to become pregnant and watching your body for its fertile time, you’ll be aware of the changes to your vaginal mucus. Insufficient “egg-white” mucus can be a sign that your system is too acidic. This acidity can be due to an overgrowth of candida, which needs to be addressed in order to create a more alkaline environment that isn’t hostile to sperm.

Signs that you may have an overgrowth of candida include:

  • Repeated bouts of thrush

  • Bloating

  • Sugar/alcohol cravings

  • Constipation or diarrhoea

  • Fatigue

  • Emotional ups and downs

  • Depression

An overgrowth of candida can be dealt with very effectively using a combination of homeopathic remedies (such as Pulsatilla, pictured here) and dietary changes. Please feel free to get in touch for further information.

Natural Fertility with Homeopathy #5: Top 5 foods to improve fertility

Below are five kinds of food which, when included in a nutritious and balanced diet, can help promote fertility.

Leafy green veg

Kale, watercress, spinach and many more leafy green veg contain, amongst many healthy constituents, folic acid, which is essential for healthy ovarian function and helps reduce the risk of defects of the brain or spinal chord in babies.

Sunflower seeds

These seeds are high in zinc, which better allows the body to make use of the reproductive hormones oestrogen and progesterone.

Chickpeas

Chickpeas are high in vitamin B6. B6 is an essential prerequisite for balanced progesterone function, which aids conception and the development of the egg and also the sperm.

Avocados

This fruit is especially important to include in your diet if you’re on IVF. It contains high levels of mono saturated fats, which have demonstrated their benefits in terms of IVF outcomes.

Turmeric

Turmeric is generally seen as a superfood. However, regarding fertility, according to Traditional Chinese Medicine, together with other “warming” spices like coriander, cumin and ginger, turmeric will help create the right internal conditions for conception.

Please get in touch for further information.

Natural Fertility with Homeopathy #4: Blood sugar balance and fertility

donuts-2969490_1920.jpg

Sugar is sadly bad news when looking to improve your natural fertility. Having high blood sugar results in a suppression of the Sex Hormone Binding Globulin, which is responsible for regulating sex hormones. High blood sugar is also a major criterion for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Lastly, high blood sugar also has the effect of putting stress on the adrenal glands, which might already be under strain from having a stressful job or the stress of trying for a baby, not to mention dealing with both during a global pandemic. In combination with eating a nutritious and balanced diet, homeopathic remedies work to restore the hormonal balance which is so essential to natural fertility.  Please get in touch for further information.

Natural Fertility with Homeopathy #3: Gut health and fertility

There is a great deal said about the importance of maintaining good gut health. This is never truer than when considering fertility. Poor gut health can create an imbalance in the gut bacteria responsible for metabolising oestrogen, it can also result in raised cortisol levels and lead to a chronic inflammation of hormone receptors. All of this can seriously impact your fertility.

Signs of poor gut health include the following: constipation or diarrhoea, nausea, bloating, a lot of wind or acid reflux. Of these, constipation is perhaps the most problematic for fertility as it means that toxins are unable to leave the body effectively. You might have impaired gut health if you've had a lot of antibiotics, suffered prolonged stress, have food intolerances, have used a lot of pharmaceutical or recreational drugs or eat processed foods very regularly.

Homeopathic remedies are effective at restoring good gut health and removing any barriers to conception that might exist in that and other parts of your body system or emotional and mental health. Please get in touch for further information.

Natural Fertility with Homeopathy #2: Liver Health

greater-celandine-5208207_1920.jpg

Good liver health is vital for balanced hormones as one of the liver’s many vital functions is to transform hormones into more usable forms. If your liver is sluggish, this can lead to an imbalance in oestrogen and progesterone, and more specifically oestrogen dominance which has a negative impact on fertility.

Signs that your liver might need some support include:

  • Waking feeling unrefreshed and waking 1-3am.

  • Slow digestion, bad breath, constipation, poor appetite first thing and craving sweets later in the day.

  • A muffin or apple shaped figure.

  • The colour yellow: yellow stools, yellow back of your tongue, yellow palms of hands or skin on the face.

  • Dark brown or bluish swelling under the eyes.

  • Chilliness

Homeopathic fertility treatment is always totally individualised and will recognise the importance of both emotional and physical issues. However, if there are indications that your liver needs support, your prescription will include a liver detox remedy such as Chelidonium, pictured here. Chelidonium is a wonderful remedy for restoring strong liver function, which thereby works to rebalance hormones whilst reenergising your whole system.

Natural Fertility with Homeopathy #1: Detoxing The Pill

No one can deny that The Pill can be an extremely useful drug, one that has its place in history for its role in female emancipation. However, the function of The Pill is to ask the body to do what is not natural, to not be fertile. Long term use of The Pill can therefore result in difficulty re-establishing the menstrual cycle and also ovulation, as having a monthly bleed is no guarantee that you’re ovulating.

Although homeopathic prescriptions are tailored to the individual, the remedy Folliculinum is incredibly effective for detoxing The Pill and is very often included in a prescription where there is a picture of issues since being on it. Folliculinum encourages the body to regain its natural hormonal rhythms and consequently also its fertility. Please get in touch for further information.

Home Prescribe homeopathy #11 Emotional Acutes

worried-girl-413690_1920.jpg

This week we'll take a look at 3 remedies that can be incredibly helpful at taking the edge off acute emotional episodes, allowing you to cope while processing whatever has taken place in your life. Please do bear in mind that these blog entries are based simply on the Helios Basic 18 kit and therefore we cannot cover the many, varied and very healing homeopathic remedies that apply in emotional situations, and which apply in addressing root causes of emotional upset.

Ignatia

Ignatia is the first remedy to think of for grief and for ailments that have come on since a bereavement such as a cough, a lump in the throat or sleeplessness. There can be extremes in the response of the person needing Ignatia, as they may be silent in their grief but also experience moments of hysteria. Generally there's a sense of the person being overwhelmed by their feelings. Please bear Ignatia in mind for lesser, though still traumatic times, such as broken relationships or career disappointments.

Gelsemium

This remedy applies after a shock or from hearing bad news, but is also a remedy where there's anticipatory anxiety. The person needing Gelsemium will shake or tremble with their fear, or be paralysed by it. This is a remedy for people who utterly dread the dentist, or who are terrified about their upcoming exam, and their fear is such that they might actually miss the ordeal rather than face it.

Aconite

Is a primary panic attack remedy. The person will feel terrified, and fear that they are going to die. They suffer tight-chested sensations and palpitations; their anguish is such that they cannot be still. Aconite works to great effect with Argentum Nitrate, a major anxiety remedy, for panic attacks.

Home Prescribe homeopathy #10 Coughs

Hi all. Having a few homeopathic remedies in the house to deal with coughs can be very handy and prevent many a sleepless night. Below are three of the top cough remedies used in homeopathy. Please note that these remedies are recommended for non-severe, non-serious situations. Professionsal help should always be sought if the cough is severe or persistent.

Pulsatilla

This is an invaluable children's remedy, though it's not exclusively for children. Think of this remedy if the person you're helping turns into a snot factory when they have a cold. The Pulsatilla cough will often be productive, ie the person will cough up a fair amount of phlegm. They'll feel better in the fresh air and worse in a warm, stuffy room. Pulsatilla people aren't generally stoical in illness: they're needy, clingy and usually feel rather sorry for themselves.

Bryonia

The cough that Bryonia will help is dry and very painful. Because the Bryonia person generally feels worse for movement and better for rest and keeping still, they may well hold their head or chest while coughing to limit the movement the coughs make. As the cough is dry, they'll be very thirsty and are likely to be extremely irritable.

Aconite

Think of this remedy if a cough develops suddenly, especially after you've been caught out in the cold. The cough is characteristically croupy and the person might also have a fever. The Aconite person will often be anxious and restless.

I hope you found this useful. There are many homeopathic remedies to heal coughs in their many variations, so please get in touch if the cough that you or your family member tends to get differs from the pictures described above.

Home Prescribe homeopathy # 9 Burns

beach-dawn-dusk-ocean-189349.jpg

Hello all. Here are some tips on how to deal with minor burns using homeopathy to ease the pain and speed the healing in addition to the measures recommended by St. John's Ambulance.

Cantharis

This remedy is for very painful burns which will bring those classic burning and smarting sensations. The affected area will be swollen and possibly blistered. It will feel much better for cool things placed on top. Remember Cantharis for sunburn too and it is homeopathy's number one remedy for cystitis, which also has intense burning pains.

Aconite, Arnica and Calendula

Aconite and Arnica will be very helpful to help calm the shock which can frequently come alongside a shock, and Calendula is wonderfully soothing for sore skin and may help prevent scarring.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch for further information and I hope you found this helpful.

Home Prescribe Homeopathy #8 Diarrhoea and vomiting

Hello all.

Here are two must-have remedies to have around the house to help if you’re faced with a case of diarrhoea and vomiting.

Arsenicum

This is the first remedy to think of in cases of food poisoning, though as it’s often hard to know the cause of diarrhoea and vomiting, if the symptoms of the remedy described below fit, Arsenicum is your remedy whether the cause is viral or due to food poisoning.

The person requiring Arsenicum in a case of diarrhoea or vomiting will feel very weak, even prostrated, and chilly. The pains they experience would feel burning, so for example the oesophagus might burn after bouts of vomiting and despite this, as they are very chilly, they’ll want hot drinks. They’ll be thirsty, but just for small sips of fluid.

The person who’d benefit from this remedy will be difficult to look after as they’ll be very needy and wanting to be reassured that they just have a mild illness and are not actually on the verge of death; Arsenicum are great hypochondriacs. An additional complication for the person caring for an Arsenicum patient will be their fastidious nature, which might be accentuated in ill-health. This person will not tolerate an untidy bedside table.

Nux Vomica

The name of this remedy says it all. Nux Vomica is for diarrhoea and vomiting that comes after overindulgence of in food or alcohol; it is the classic hangover remedy. The Nux Vomica person is no milder a person to care for than the Arsenicum person described above; they’ll be grumpy, easily annoyed and oversensitive. They’ll also feel chilly and want to sit very still and warm till their symptoms pass.

I hope this is helpful. Please get in touch if there's anything you'd like to know more about.

Home Prescribe Homeopathy #7 Bites and stings

bee-1575236_1920.jpg

Here are four key remedies that can be very helpful to ease the pain and discomfort of uncomplicated bites and stings.

Apis

Made from the honeybee, it's not surprising that this remedy is for bites and stings, though not only those from a bee. Apis is your remedy if the affected area stings like mad, is very red and is PUFFY. It'll feel hot and you'll want to put something cool on it to ease the pain.

Ledum

This is homeopathy's number one remedy for puncture wounds and helps the body eject the toxins. The affected part will also be swollen, though not as puffy as with Apis. The characteristic colour with Ledum swellings are purplish, and the affected area will feel cool or cold, but nevertheless you'll want to put cool things on the area.

Belladonna

Belladonna suits the situation if the affected area is hot, red and throbs with the pain.

Hypericum

Hypericum, or St John's Wort, is best suited when the pain from the site of the bite or sting is shooting, and especially if it shoots along nerves.

I hope this is helpful. Please get in touch if there's anything you'd like to know more about.

Home Prescribe Homeopathy #6: Remedies for headaches

Here are four key headache remedies which can be used by a home-prescriber to treat uncomplicated and non-severe headaches. Obviously, immediate professional help should be sought if the headache is accompanied by unresponsiveness, a stiff neck or extreme sensitivity to light. Professional help must also be sought if the headache comes on after trauma to the head.

Belladonna

We have seen this remedy in previous blog posts as it is such a useful remedy for illnesses which come on suddenly and which are characteristically hot and throbbing. The Belladonna headache will be just that – throbbing – or congestive, and the head will feel hot and full.  The face may be reddish and flushed and there may be some sensitivity to light. People with a Belladonna headache will not want to be jarred as this will make the pain worse. The headache might come on with a fever.

Bryonia

The key thing to remember with this other brilliantly useful remedy is that whatever symptoms you have, they’ll always feel worse for movement. Therefore, the person with a Bryonia headache might describe it as “splitting” or “bursting” and will sit perfectly still, possibly with their head in their hands. The pain, which could well be quite severe, will make them irritable, so they are likely to be very grumpy indeed if asked to move, or indeed if there is any kind of movement in their immediate vicinity. Bryonia is nicknamed “Dryonia” as it is a very dry remedy, and the headache could well be due to dehydration. As a result, they’ll be thirsty and gulp water down.

Gelsemium

The Gelsemium headache is dull and might feel like a tight band around the head, as if you’ve been wearing a hat that’s too small for you. The headache will often come with drowsiness and droopy eyelids, and perhaps with dizziness and trembling. This remedy is very useful when symptoms come on as a result of anticipation, so if the headache comes on the day before a big exam, Gelsemium could well be very healing.

Nux Vomica

This is a gem of a remedy to have around the house if you have overdone things the night before and are suffering a hangover headache. The headache will probably be accompanied by digestive symptoms, especially constipation or nausea. The Nux Vomica person will not be stoical or suffer in silence; they will be very irritable and ratty and will complain at the slightest noise or if the light is too strong.

Homeopathy for life in Lockdown

man-2037255_1920.jpg

This morning’s headlines are all about the government’s plans for the tentative relaxing of Lockdown regulations in the workplace. After such a prolonged period of isolation, the prospect of being released, albeit gradually, from constraints, might feel a relief for some but frightening for others. Below are some major homeopathic remedies that can be extremely helpful in soothing anxiety, allowing you to find the strength to meet life’s new and very pressing demands.

Arsenicum Album

This remedy is suitable when there is an anxiety about your health and about germs, which can turn into obsessive behaviour such as ritualistic handwashing which vastly exceeds government handwashing advice.

Gelsemium

The primary feeling that calls for this remedy is a fear of bad news and of what might happen.

Ignatia

The difficult emotions that can be seen in the person who’d benefit from Ignatia are often upset and anger rapidly succeeding each other. Ignatia is also a remedy that can be very healing in times of grief.

Pulsatilla

A person who would benefit from Pulsatilla will be very needy and require a lot of support from their family or friends. They might be extremely moody and often tearful.

If you’d like to know more about the above, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

I wish you all well and thank you for reading.

Bach Flower remedies for testing times

My absolute respect and gratitude goes to those people who are on the front line during this international crisis. Nothing can compare to what they are going through, but those of us in self-isolation are managing far lesser but sometimes difficult times too. Anxiety, for example, is running high for many people, and fear for the safety of loved ones. Bach Flower remedies can really help to take the edge off such feelings and help us to carry on with our lives with the strength we need.

Mimulus

This flower is for fear of known things such as illness, death or pain and an anxiety that won't go away. Mimulus will help restore courage enough to face the trials ahead.

Oak

Just like the tree from which this remedy is prepared, Oak people are usually very strong. They are reliable and hardworking. Their sense of duty powers them forward but in such times as these, exhaustion cannot be fought forever and burnout is a very real possibility. Oak will help renew the energy and help remind us that we need to take care of ourselves as well as others.

Red Chestnut

This remedy is specifically for those who burn up their energy in worrying for others, especially close family and friends. These people might not ordinarily be worriers, but our current climate of fear is very infectious. Red Chestnut will help nurture the ability to care for others without being crushed by anxiety and to remain calm in emergencies.

Star of Bethlehem

This is a remedy for the after effects of shock in the form of bad news, bereavement, sudden disappointments and so on. In times such as these, this remedy will help soften the blow, to aid gentle recuperation and allow you to carry on as much as you can with life's demands. Dr Bach said of Star of Bethlehem: "the great comforter and soother of pains and sorrow."

Go to bachremedies.com for further information and on how to obtain these beautiful remedies. I hope this helps.

Stay well. Stay safe.

Ps. Due to the current crisis, I have put my current series of blog posts on hold, but will return to it soon.

Home prescribe homeopathy # 5: Aconite, Belladona, Apis, Mercurius and Rhus Tox for sore throats

the-hippo-418162_1920.jpg

Below are some remedies to think of if you're dealing with a sore throat. Please bear in mind when self-prescribing, that this advice is for non-complicated cases. Seek medical help if the person has any difficulty swallowing or breathing, is drooling or fatigued, has pus in the back of their throat or if they've had their symptoms for more than 7 days.

Aconite

Please refer to my previous post on fevers for more detailed information about this remedy. However, keep in your mind that Aconite is invaluable at the onset of an acute illness, especially after being caught out in the cold.

Belladonna

Again, please look at my previous post on fevers for more information about this equally important remedy. Characteristically, a Belladonna sore throat will have come on very suddenly, and the affected area will be hot and red, and the person will describe the pain as throbbing.

Mercurius

A Mercurius sore throat will be very painful and swollen. The tongue will be very coated, the breath will be extremely offensive, and there will be excess saliva being produced, perhaps even drooling. A person needing Mercurius will be a "human barometer" being hot, then cold, then hot and so on. The glands in their neck will be swollen.

Rhus Tox

We saw this remedy in the third post of this series. Rhus Tox is a remedy for the overuse of different parts of the body, and that includes the throat. Rhus Tox will be needed when the the throat is actually better for talking and also for drinking, especially for drinking warm drinks and warmth in general. When the throat hasn't been "used" for a while, like first thing in the morning, it'll feel worse.

Apis

This is a remedy prepared from the honey bee, and it's therefore no surprise that it's useful when the sore throat is characterised by a red, swollen and shiny uvula, just as bee stings are red, swollen and shiny. The sore throat may be an allergic response  and will feel much better for cold applications and cold drinks, and even for sucking on ice cubes.

Home prescribe homeopathy # 4: Aconite, Belladonna and Chamomilla for fevers

Aconite, Belladonna and Chamomilla are the top three homeopathic remedies for fevers, and given at the onset of symptoms can be incredibly effective at both bringing down the fever fast and nipping any developing symptoms of colds, coughs and other illnesses in the bud.

Do please note that the NHS website advises to get an emergency GP appointment if your child:

  • is under 3 months old and has a temperature of 38C or higher, or you think they have a fever

  • is 3 to 6 months old and has a temperature of 39C or higher, or you think they have a fever

  • has other signs of illness, such as a rash as well as a high temperature

The following homeopathic advice, therefore, is to support the person while waiting for the appointment or at the very first sign of the fever.

Aconite

Aconite is for fevers which come on suddenly and strongly. The child needing Aconite will often wake at night, with a hot, dry heat and full of fear. Their heart might be racing, they'll be restless, and very, very anxious. The symptoms might come on after having been out in a cold, dry wind earlier that day, or after having been very scared by something. Aconite is very useful at the first sign of lots of children's acute illnesses such as coughs, colds and sore throats.

Belladonna

Like Aconite, the Belladonna fever comes on very suddenly. The child will wake hot (though their hands and feet may feel cool), red cheeked and perhaps with glassy eyes and dilated pupils. The Belladonna child may well become delirious in fever, perhaps seeing monsters in the shadows.

 Chamomilla

Classically, Chamomilla (pictured here) is the remedy to think of if your child has a fever which accompanies teething. The fact that teething is behind the fever might well be indicated by the fact the child may have one red and one pale cheek. The child may have a sweaty head, but it is their behaviour which is most indicative of this remedy: the child is very irritable, even angry, with the fever. They'll be very needy, wanting to be picked up and held as you pace exhaustedly up and down the room. They'll also be capricious, wanting one thing and then another, then another but nothing satisfies. Chamomilla will bring down the fever and calm the anger.

Sometimes it can be worrying to see your child with a fever, and that anxiety can make it hard to decide which remedy fits the closest. It is possible to obtain all three remedies in a combination called ABC (Aconite, Belladonna, Chamomilla) for such moments.

Home prescribe homeopathy # 3: Rhus Tox and Ruta for sprains and strains

man-3314790_1280.png

Rhus Tox and Ruta are two remedies which work beautifully hand in hand for sprains and strains. Each has its own individual usage and one may well be more suitable for some situations, but they can also be used together to great effect.

Rhus Tox suits sprains and strains to any part of the body. Typically the area will be stiff and will feel worse on first movement but better for continued movement when the body warms up. Think of trying to get out of chair when you’ve strained your back; at first it’s agony then you limber up and the pain recedes. This is a situation for Rhus Tox. The pain will be better for warmth and because the pains ease with movement, the person will be restless and in search of a comfortable position. Think of Rhus Tox for backache from over-lifting and for the overuse of any part eg Tennis Elbow.

Ruta is for strained ligaments and tendons which have lost their elasticity and feel stiff. It works very well alongside or after Rhus Tox. Consider Ruta in preference to Rhus Tox for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, eye strain, ganglion cysts and bursistis.

This advice is for treatment of non-severe, uncomplicated cases. If in any doubt, seek professional help and remember RICE - Rest, Ice (cold compress), Comfortable Support, Elevate.
